- Aboriginal Name - applied to the Aboriginal name of features that also have a European name.

- Departmental Name - applied to features named by government agencies that are not regarded as places in terms of the Geographical Names Act, 1991.

- Departmental (Historical) Name - applied to features that would have been classified Departmental Name but no longer exist, or the former name of such features when the name has been changed.

- Geographical Name in terms of the Geographical Names Act, 1991 - is applied to natural features and major cultural features such as towns.

- Geographical (Historical) Name - same as Geographical Name but refers to features that no longer exist.

- Local Name - applied to features that are not regarded as places in terms of the Geographical Names Act, 1991 or are excluded from the operations of the Act.

- Local (Historical) Name - applied to features that would have been classified Local Name but no longer exist, or the former name of such features where the name has been changed.

- Recorded Name in terms of the Geographical Names Act, 1991 - generally refers to minor cultural features such as wells and dams and to certain natural features when the name is regarded as descriptive.

- Recorded (Historical) Name - applied to minor cultural features that no longer exist, or to the former name of any feature that could be classified as a Geographical Name or a Recorded Name that has had its name changed.

- Unapproved Name - applied to names that have been submitted but not approved by the Geographical Names Advisory Committee. These are included in the State Gazetteer for information only and should NOT be used.

- Variant Name - applied to any alternative unaccepted spelling for any other classification.
